The Friends week-long trip to Helsinki was excellent, despite our outward flight cancellation!. Alternative arrangements via Oslo or Paris meant a very late night arrival, but everyone arrived safely, if a little tired!
The fantastic itinerary prepared by our guide Claire Gould enabled us to visit many public and private venues during our visit and the weather, apart from our last morning, was very good.

There were so many highlights of the tour that it is hard to pick out the best but here are a selection.
- a backstage tour of the beautiful Finnish National Theatre hosted by the Director
- the Sámi art exhibition at the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art
- the stunning private art collection in the home of Rafaela Seppälä
- the Finnish National Gallery, Ateneum
- the guided tour of the Finnish Parliament building
- the National Museum of Photography
- the guided tour of the Espoo Museum of Modern Art (EMMA)
- the Didrichsen Art Museum with it’s current William Morris exhibition!
- the Hvittrask house, built of logs and natural stone, the boyhood home of world-famous architect Eero Saarinen.
In addition to the above, we were able to visit the studios of several artists, both well established and also those in the early stages of their careers. It was great to visit artist Elina Merimies and renowned photographer Elina Brotherus but also two graduate artists and then to see their work at the Art Academy’s Spring Show.
Comments received from those Friends on the tour indicate it's popularity-
“it was inspiring and I learned such a lot”
“it was exhausting but most stimulating and memorable”
“tour guide Claire Gould did an amazing job”
“ it was a real privilege to be hosted by so many artists and curators”
“we saw such interesting art in such interesting places”
“meeting so many artists with their work and being able to put the strands together was truly amazing”
The next overseas tour is planned to be to Rome at the end of this November and details should be available in the coming weeks.
