Entangled and Woven Look Club
Student Review
We had a fascinating and enlightening talk by Amy George, curator of Textiles and Wallpaper, at our Look Club last week. A few of our members came and also 18 students which shows how keen they are to be involved with us and the gallery. Three of them were so interested by Amy's insights that they wrote the following review.
"On Tuesday 20 October, 25 Friends of the Whitworth – including 18 Student Friends – joined the FOW ‘Look Club’ to view and discuss a new exhibition as part of the Hyundai Translocal Series, titled Entangled and Woven. As a group, we were led by senior curator Amy George around and through the exhibition which combines newly commissioned works by eight artists from South Korea and India with historic Korean and Indian textiles from the Whitworth’s own collection. The pairing of large-scale installation and juxtaposing traditional and innovative textile methods created an immersive, bodily experience in which we could closely examine the artists' exceptional craftsmanship.
After the tour, we discussed the process of creating it, including how the idea was conceived and developed, which techniques and materials were used and why, as well as how the works were realised, transported, and displayed to an audience. We also spoke on themes and the relationships between culture, migration, and artistic labour, in addition to recognising the connections the exhibition possesses to Manchester and its industrial textile past. The Whitworth is the final destination on the exhibition’s three-part tour, previously being shown Cheongju Craft Biennale in 2025, and the National Crafts Museum & Hastkala Academy in New Delhi."
Alexandra Smith, Lucy Cleminson, Maggie Marples Art History third-year undergraduates.
