New Members go 'Behind the Scenes'
In June, nearly 30 new members came to the first New Members event since the pandemic. Arranged by the gallery and curatorial staff, it was a wonderful opportunity to see ‘behind the scenes’ and meet and talk to the curators and their staff.
In the Study Centre, Amy George, Interim Head of Collections, put out some varied works acquired with support by the Friends. There was great interest by one member in the recent vibrant ABC Wax Archive, the last surviving industrial design archive of a Manchester textile printing company which made textiles for export, as she had previously worked for them.
Over the last few months, the Friends have been busy fund raising for the ‘Albrecht Dürer: Material World’ exhibition. It was exciting to have a tour with Imogen Holmes-Roe, co-curator, to see the final stages of the exhibition’s install which opened on 30 June to highly acclaimed reviews.
Preparing for a new exhibition ‘About Material Power: Palestinian Embroidery, Ann French, Textiles Conservator and Collections Care Manager, explained the task of mounting and transporting the dresses for the exhibition which begins in Kettle’s Yard and returns to the Whitworth in the autumn.
A great afternoon with lots of interesting questions and insights, a chance to talk to the curators and make new friends.
