A welcome from the Student Ambassador.
My name is Emily Hargreaves and I’m the student ambassador for the Friends of the Whitworth (FoW). I’m currently a second-year art history student at Manchester University. I started the position halfway through my first year, where I had the opportunity to plan and partake in two events, one of which was a hat decorating afternoon, where members of the FoW came in to help guide students on how to successfully embellish a design of their choosing onto a cap! The creative afternoon was a lovely reprieve from studies, allowing my classmates and I to reconnect with the imaginative sides of our brains, which was needed after a week of studying.
The second event we organised was a Look Club focused on the ‘Women in Revolt’ exhibition, where a group of FoW members and student members were guided around the exhibition by a curator. This gave us the opportunity to explore the context behind specific artworks in greater depth and to engage in discussions within a diverse group, gaining insights from a wide range of perspectives.
I applied to the role as I've always been interested in the inner workings of art galleries and the jobs that go on behind the scenes. Additionally, in my spare time, I love to oil paint, and I even had the opportunity to visit Florence for two months, where I spent a month of my time at an art school learning to refine my oil painting abilities, and the other month studying fashion marketing at a university. All these opportunities have only increased my love for the arts, and I'm so honoured to be a part of Student Friends of the Whitworth, an art community within the university!
