You’ve been to the Whitworth Art Gallery and visited the Manchester Art Gallery.
What about the Saul Hay Gallery (https://www.saulhayfineart.co.uk/), or the artists’ studios at Paradise Works (https://www.paradise-works.com/) , Rogue Studios (https://rastudios.co.uk/), and Venture Arts (https://venturearts.org/)?
With artist, Katie McGuire in her studio at Paradise Works
Do you know that The Manchester Contemporary invites the most exciting international and UK galleries to showcase their work in Manchester every year (https://www.themanchestercontemporary.co.uk)?
Manchester is rich in art venues. It’s also home to many working artists. Visits to galleries and studios in Manchester are regular parts of our programme. What’s more, every year we organise a Friends of the Whitworth curated tour of The Manchester Contemporary so that you can see the strength of the UK’s regional artists and galleries alongside key international presentations.
A curated tour for Friends, Manchester Contemporary, Autumn 2019
We don’t stop there, though.
- Have you been to Huddersfield Art Gallery?
- What about The Harris in Preston?
- How many of the other great Northern City Art Collections do you know?
Come on- keep up! The Friends of the Whitworth regularly arrange day trips by coach to visit these, and other, treasures. Twice a year, we go even further afield for a few days – Dundee to see the new V&A, Hull to take part in the City of Culture, London and, just this year, Canterbury and the surrounding area... .
"Is it OK to be Black?", Hurvin Anderson, the Turner Prize Show, Ferens Gallery, Hull, City of Culture, 2017
And while you are catching your breath, let’s tell you about:
- Our exclusive exhibition tours with our curators at the Whitworth. They’ll explain and interpret the art, and often give you an insight into how the exhibition was conceived and built. Art has many layers of meaning. It’s a whole different experience when it is explained by an expert!
- Our lectures by excellent art historians
Whitworth curator, Imogen Holmes Roe, at a Friends' Preview of Standardisation and Deviation
Zoom was a Covid buster. The Friends arranged and listened to lectures on, amongst other things, Art and the Plague, Victorian Decorative Glass, the work of the conservator, and Lowry. Recently a Senior Curator from The Hermitage spoke to us, live from St Petersburg, about the history of the Hermitage and its collection!
Fabulous as all this has been, nothing lives up to standing in a Gallery in front of a work of art, though. There will be lots to see in 2023 - starting with a special curator tour of the fabulour Althea McNish exhibition, Colour is Mine,
You can join online here for as little as £27 a year (single) and £45 (double). https://www.friendsofthewhitworth.org.uk/Article/Membership
