My name is Eva Bielawski and I am the new student ambassador of the Friends of The Whitworth. I am currently in my second year of studying History of Art at the University of Manchester and it is my passion for the subject which has led me to desire a career in museums – and what better place to start than at The Whitworth! What I love about the study of art is that it follows the rhythms of a society; it celebrates, questions, rejects and explains much of what we are surrounded by. In my role so far, I have directly witnessed the impact a gallery can have on its community and the importance of fostering these relationships on a human scale as the gallery exists as a testimony to the lives it represents.
My purpose here as student ambassador consists of coordinating between the Friends of The Whitworth and the student body in order to raise funds for and encourage engagement with the gallery. To many, the ‘Art Institution’ may seem like a daunting and vague entity, but it is my job to attempt to make art more accessible to students and to humanise the institution of the gallery space in order to encourage participation. Since my first year at the University of Manchester, I have had the joy of participating in many events organised by the Friends of the Whitworth such as a beading workshop and various Look Clubs, and I am very excited to continue these in my position over the course of the next year.
