The Friends Take Over the Gallery
“Delightful”, “buzzy”, “you made the Whitworth sing”, “the Friends of the Whitworth Players nailed it”.
These are just some of the comments and compliments we received after our SHOWCASE on April 11th when, following our Annual General meeting, the Friends of the Whitworth took over the Gallery for an evening of music, performance, art and more.
We were joined for the evening by the Lord Mayor of the City of Manchester, Councillor June Hitchen, who toured the Gallery with us, and joined in with the drop-in print workshop, proving to be a dab hand with the roller and paints. The Cafe in the Trees served a special menu of “retro” food-the chicken in a basket proved a hit-all served by staff whose outfits came straight from 1970”s Carnaby Street. The Gallery’s Study Centre was open for the evening and curators, Holly Grange and Leanne Green, welcomed visitors to a special display of works acquired over the last 85 years with the help of the Friends. Contemporary work, produced by Friends, was for sale on the Lower Promenade and included a wide variety of media, embroidery, oils, photography, pen and ink and more.
Meanwhile, in the South Gallery, the Abelia Saxophone Quartet showed their own skill and the amazing virtuosity of the Saxophone as an instrument. Gallery Director, Alistair Hudson, gave us an inspiring account of the Gallery’s mission to bring about social change through art. Not least, The Friends of the Whitworth Players introduced us to “Mr Ruskin in Manchester,” an irreverent account by scriptwriter and Friend of the Whitworth, Graham Carlisle, of John Ruskin’s troubled relationship with our great city!
If you were able to join us on the night we hope you enjoyed it. If not, take a look at the picture gallery (photos by Mike Tierney). We think that it captures the mood of what was a very special evening.
