A Taste of the Whitworth
The Cafe at the Whitworth has been a favourite spot for visitors for many years. In its first location, off the main Oxford Road entrance to the Gallery, Peter Booth, "The Modern Caterer", earned a widely acclaimed, and well-deserved reputation for his delicious food. Peter’s emphasis was then, and remains now, the use of the best quality seasonal ingredients put together in imaginative combinations and served with flair.
When the new Whitworth extension opened it revealed a cafe in a spectacular location. Elevated in the trees and surrounded by glass, overlooking both Whitworth Park and the Gallery's Art Garden - a fitting location in which to provide food for the soul along with food for the stomach!
So, as you can see, the Cafe in the Trees is a great meeting place - an inspiring and relaxed environment to enjoy before, after and, since you can't get too much of a good thing, during a visit to one of the Whitworth's exhibitions. It's where we hold our Friends of the Whitworth dinner after our Annual Pilkington Lecture and where our Look Club gathers on a Thursday evening to continue our conversation. We can't wait to be able to visit again, and to while away time eating, drinking and chatting with Friends! In anticipation, Peter has provided the Friends with a selection of his own wonderful recipes to try out at home.
We will be publishing Peter's recipes soon on this website. While you're waiting, however, we are offering you, by way of an appetiser, a selection of photos from the diary of one of our Friends of the Whitworth cooks, Richard Butler, who has been testing one of the recipes - Papperdella Pasta, Mushroom Ragu, Aged Pecorino and toasted walnuts! - for us.
Nice work if you can get it, Richard!
