On 26 April 2024, History of Art students were given the opportunity by Friends of the Whitworth to create a cover design for a notebook inspired by an aspect of the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, to be sold in a weekly pop-up sale to raise funds for the gallery.
Using a range of materials provided by the Friends, we experimented with collage and paints to come up with a colourful, eclectic array of compositions. Designs were influenced by the gallery’s involvement with hosting Sunday concerts in the gallery, its vast nature garden and park surrounding it and the unique architecture of the building; wandering around the grounds and taking pictures sparked inspiration.
It was a lovely afternoon to get to know some of the Friends of the Whitworth, and their creative backgrounds and how they got involved with the art gallery. After a couple of hours, the notebook covers came together and we submitted our designs to the Friends of the Whitworth, who selected a few to be printed and sold in the autumn and winter of 2024.
My design, ‘Whitworth Spring’, was inspired by the angular architecture of the contemporary rear extension of the nineteenth-century building, incorporating glass and concrete to contrast the traditional red brick front exterior. Using vibrant paints and paper, I created my cover using a collage and layering style to depict an abstract view of the gallery when its flowers have blossomed.
