Sunny but crisp weather greeted our group of 24 for our first visit, the Museum of Modern Art, followed by a short guided tour of a bleak Kilmainham Gaol (pictured).
On day two we immersed ourselves in the Book of Kells exhibition and light show experience, and thence to the National Museum of Archaeology with its magnificent collection of early gold work .
We visited Slane and the poet Francis Ledwidge’s cottage museum the following day, then on to Drogheda to the Highlanes Art Gallery with its small collection of modern Irish artists, followed by a tour of the Millmount Museum of local life. Our final call was the striking modern church of St.Mary.
There was a full fourth day at the impressive National Gallery of Art, an amalgam of Georgian and modern architecture with comprehensive and varied collections. The handsome Hugh Lane Gallery of modern art was our afternoon visit, featuring exhibitions of work by Brian Maguire and the collection of founding artist Sarah Purser.
Our final morning was spent at the remarkable Chester Beatty collection at Dublin Castle with an impressive array of books, calligraphy and religious manuscripts.
Special thanks must go to our tour guide Jane Brand for her excellent guiding and to Joan Gem for organising a most stimulating and enjoyable tour.
