Christmas tour & lunch
The Friends’ final event of the year was a tour of the Manchester library, followed by lunch at the Manchester Art Gallery.
The day began with a guided tour behind the scenes of the library. We were given a fascinating insight into how the library supports the people of the city, its value as an archive and the history of the building from its beginnings. The tour ended with a look at some of the ancient and rare books in its vast collection. Some of these had been written by hand before the printing press had been invented so, this was a real treat.
The group then walked across St. Peter’s Square to the Manchester Art Gallery where a special room had been laid out for our Christmas lunch. It was a lovely way to end the year which everyone agreed had been a great success both for the Friends of the Whitworth and the gallery itself.
