Mince pies and Christmas Cards in September? Although it is ridiculously early to start thinking about Christmas, we find we have to plan our Christmas card sales - which help us raise much needed money for the Whitworth Gallery - so that we are in line with other charities.
Readers who are Friends of the Whitworth will recently have received, as a gift, a set of cards to share with their own friends, and many have been in touch to buy more!
We thought you might like to hear more about the talented artists, both Friends of the Whitworth, who designed the cards for us this year, see the cards they designed and some of their other work. So let us introduce, first of all in this article, Juliet Jones.
Juliet writes:
I was born in Manchester and brought up mainly in Stockport. I enjoyed painting and drawing from an early age and although my childhood ambition was to become an archaeologist, I spent most of the 1960s at Manchester College of Art and Design where I studied graphics, started the College Dramatic Society and organised Arts Balls.
This varied activity led eventually to teaching in several secondary schools in Cheshire. I had the good fortune to work in two grammar schools with sympathetic headmistresses, so I was not only an art teacher but also took classes for drama and designed and directed school productions.
I left the profession in 1991 for family reasons and then developed my own artistic career as a watercolourist. I soon started giving lessons and holding exhibitions of my work. I joined Manchester Graphic Club and Altrincham Society of Artists and was Chair of the latter from 2005 to 2012; I am currently their President.
As far as influences are concerned, I love the watercolours of John Singer Sargent and John Piper's Welsh landscapes. The contemporary painters I most admire are David Hockney and Barbara Rae.
