These are difficult times. For very obvious reasons we have cancelled what was remaining of our Spring Programme and, for now at least, we won’t be publishing our summer programme. The amazing Friends of the Whitworth team, who give their time freely so that all the money we raise can be used to support the Gallery, its Collections and activities, never give up, though.
Working in isolation, our Programme team are already researching places to visit and things to do once the crisis ends-as it will. High on our list of possibilities is a trip over the border to Yorkshire. It’s not far and the locals are said to be friendly!
More seriously, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the Hepworth Gallery are on the list of possible stopping off points, and we are crossing our fingers that we can visit the former before January 2021 to see Beyond, the installation of work by the internationally renowned Portuguese artist, Joana Vasconcelos.
Vasconcelos is based in Lisbon, working in a studio in the old dock area with a team of 36 assistants. Describing herself as a conceptual artist-the idea is what counts above all else-Vasconcelos deploys her team in creating sculptural pieces, some of them monumental, which use an enormous variety of materials to comment on political and social issues. Persistent themes in her work include excess, cultural tradition and the role of women in society.
After our self-isolation, it will be wonderful to enjoy the exuberant and challenging work. We hope to see you there.
