Riga, Tallinn and Helsinki FOW Tour - Postponed
After a very difficult couple of years for us all, we are looking forward to 2022 and the possibility of travelling a little more that we have been able to do. So, the Friends of the Whitworth summer tour is back!
We had planned what promised to be a fascinating visit to Tallinn, Riga and Helsinki in 2020, before this had to be cancelled. Many of you went on the ‘virtual tour’ but how much better to do the real thing as we are hoping to run this tour in September 2022!
Our tour would include two nights in each of the three capital cities of Latvia (Riga), Estonia (Tallinn) and Finland (Helsinki). We would gain an insight into the rich cultural identities of these three countries and, in particular, the role of art in shaping and reflecting those identities.
We would be flying to Riga from Manchester and returning from Helsinki. The journey from Riga to Tallinn would be by coach and from Tallinn to Helsinki by ferry.
The trip would include the following.
RIGA
- Latvian National Museum of Art
- Art Nouveau Museum
- The Romans Suta and Aleksandra Belcova Museum
- Walking tour of the old town
TALLINN
- Kumu (Art Museum of Estonia)
- Walking tour of Tallinn old town
- Kadriorg Palace
HELSINKI
- Amos Rex museum of contemporary art
- Ateneum - Finnish Art Gallery
- Hvittrask Museum
The tour would be led by Professor Alexei Leporc, curator of Western European Art at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. Some of you will remember the excellent Zoom lecture by Alexei earlier this year when he enthralled us by his knowledge of the Hermitage and its fabulous collection of art. He has accompanied several very successful visits to the Baltic nations for other UK based cultural organisations and we are delighted that he is available to lead our tour.
These are some comments from participants of his other tours-
“Professor Leporc was wonderful and shared not only his extensive professional knowledge and expertise but also personal vignettes that brought the history and culture alive”.
“We so enjoyed the trip. Alexei (Leporc) had such a breadth of knowledge and lovely sense of humour”.
“Alexei Leporc was inspirational”.
The tour would be open to Friends of the Whitworth only, but others interested could easily become members of our worthy organisation and take part!
The tour price would include return flights from Manchester, hotel accommodation and all visits and private guided tours as specified, plus a welcome and farewell dinner. In addition, there would be a series of evening talks by Professor Leporc.
Tour deposits would be secure and refunded, in full, should the tour have to be cancelled because of Covid.
We are hoping that a full itinerary and tour price, booking form and terms and conditions (including Covid travel policy) can be sent out to Friends in March.
