Riga, Tallinn and Helsinki FOW Tour
7 - 13th May 2020
It’s that time of year when we look forward to our Friends of the Whitworth summer tour and the one planned for 2020 promises to be fascinating. It will be taking place slightly earlier in the year than usual in order to avoid the peak tourist times.
Our tour will include two nights in each of the three capital cities of Latvia (Riga), Estonia (Tallinn) and Finland (Helsinki). We will gain an insight into the rich cultural identities of these three countries and, in particular, the role of art in shaping and reflecting those identities.
We will be flying to Riga from Manchester and returning from Helsinki. The journey from Riga to Tallinn will be by coach and from Tallinn to Helsinki by ferry.
The trip will include the following.
RIGA
- Latvian National Museum of Art
- Art Nouveau Museum
- The Romans Suta and Aleksandra Belcova Museum
- Walking tour of the old town
TALLINN
- Kumu (Art Museum of Estonia)
- Walking tour of Tallinn old town
- Kadriorg Palace
HELSINKI
- Amos Rex museum of contemporary art
- Ateneum - Finnish Art Gallery
- Hvittrask Museum
The tour will be led by Professor Alexei Leporc, curator of Western European Art at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. He has accompanied several very successful visits to the Baltic nations for other UK based cultural organisations and we are delighted that he is available to lead our tour.
Some comments from participants of his other tours are as follows-
“Professor Leporc was wonderful and shared not only his extensive professional knowledge and expertise but also personal vignettes that brought the history and culture alive”.
“We so enjoyed the trip. Alexei (Leporc) had such a breadth of knowledge and lovely sense of humour”.
“Alexei Leporc was inspirational”.
The tour is open to Friends of the Whitworth only, but others interested can easily become members of our worthy organisation and take part!
The cost of the six night tour will be £1860 per person and includes return flights from Manchester, based on hand luggage only - although check-in luggage can be added for an additional charge of £30 per bag. All hotel accommodation is based on double occupancy, in standard en-suite rooms, and there is a single-room supplement of £320 per person.
The tour price also includes all visits and private guided tours as specified, plus a welcome and farewell dinner. In addition, there will be a series of evening talks by Professor Leporc.
Those who have already expressed an interest in this tour will be sent further details and a booking form by our travel company partners, Distant Horizons. Anyone interested in this tour who has not previously asked for information should do so as soon as possible by contacting Distant Horizons on 0151 625 3425.
Completed booking forms, for each traveller, and deposits of £250 per person, should be received by Distant Horizons no later than 26th November 2019, but it should be stressed that you should get your booking in as soon as possible, as numbers are limited to 25 participants and bookings will be on a first come, first served basis.
