Materials scientist Eleanor Schofield on the challenges of studying and protecting ancient wooden warships, and the enlightening process of conserving the mighty Mary Rose
Following her PhD in Materials Science & Engineering, Eleanor worked at Stanford and the University of Kent. She joined the Mary Rose as Conservation Manager in 2012 and became Head of Conservation & Collections Care in 2016, and then became Deputy CEO in 2021. She is a Chartered Scientist, Engineer and Fellow of the Institute of Materials.
Ellie is responsible for the overall care, conservation, management, interpretation and research of the Mary Rose collections. This involves the maintenance of the buildings and estates, alongside health and safety.
