Fra Angelico Zoom Lectures
Fra Angelico Zoom Lectures
Wednesday 10 September 2025
We are delighted to confirm that Nirvana Romell, who will be leading the Friends’ study tour to Florence in December, will be delivering two Zoom lectures this Autumn, one on Wednesday 10th September and the other on Wednesday 15th October. Both lectures start at 6pm.
Whilst the lectures will be of particular interest to those going on the tour, their content should appeal to all those interested in Renaissance Florence, and Fra Angelico in particular.
The first lecture, on 10th September, is titled ‘Renaissance Florence before Fra Angelico.’
Nirvana writes - ‘The birth of the Renaissance in Florence in the early 15th century was inspired by the heady mix of propitious events; the lucky escape from a major pandemic, a booming economy, the political and cultural ‘changing of the guards’, and the pairing of exceptional talents with liberal patrons. This talk introduces the Florentine art scene during the first quarter of the 15th century, from major artists such as Donatello, Masaccio and Brunelleschi, to key patrons and the ways in which they stirred artistic developments. The stylistic and iconographical developments from the international Gothic to Early Renaissance are illustrated by the major artworks of the era’.
The second lecture, on 15th October, is titled ‘Fra Angelico’s Florence’.
Nirvana writes - ‘Fra Angelico arrived in Florence in 1436, with a group of friars from Fiesole who were invited to settle in the newly rebuilt convent of San Marco. The auspicious move placed the painter at the heart of artistic life of the region, and under the patronage of Cosimo de’ Medici. His work soon amalgamated various aspects of local pictorial language, both conservatively Gothic and progressively Renaissance, and carried them beyond the Masaccio’s influence. His altarpieces and frescoes provided an inspiration to a new generation of artists such as Ghirlandaio and Botticelli. The talk looks at the work of Fra Angelico and his contemporaries in Florence.’
Booking Details
The combined cost for the lectures is £25 per person. Both lectures will be recorded and will be available shortly afterwards, on request, to anyone who cannot attend one or both. Payment will be via the usual Friends of the Whitworth booking process.
The booking deadline is 9th September.
