Yūgen Collective is an instrumental ensemble comprised of musicians at the Royal Northern College of Music. Founded by RNCM violinist Nadia Wilson, the ensemble seeks to create an atmospheric experience, embodying the essence of its name through connecting instruments from different musical settings - on this particular occasion, you will see collaboration between traditional string quartet and jazz quartet instruments. We aim to make chamber music more accessible by using less conventional performance spaces, bringing musicians and audiences of classical and popular music together.
Yūgen, a Japanese aesthetic concept, captures the feeling of awe from witnessing something profoundly beautiful and difficult to fully comprehend.
“To watch the sun sink behind a flower-clad hill. To wander on in a huge forest without thought of return. To stand upon the shore and gaze after a boat that disappears behind distant islands. To contemplate the flight of wild geese seen and lost among the clouds…” – Zeami Motokiyo
