The Meseta is a vast plateau in the heart of the Iberian Peninsula and home to some of Spain’s most famous towns and cities. This is the heart of Spain covering much of the area known as Old and New Castile where ancient alliances were forged and boundaries were often political and mental rather than physical or geographical. Castles were erected on strategic hills to ensure that small gains were not lost. Indeed, Castile's name means land or region of castles, in reference to the castles (mostly) built in the area to consolidate the Christian re-conquest from the Moors.
The visit begins in Madrid, the city founded by the Moors in the 9th Century, which became the capital of Spain in the 16th century. Despite its relatively brief history, its architectural and artistic heritage is immense, especially in the Habsburg quarter near the Puerta del Sol. This is the traditional city centre, built during the capital’s Golden Age, which today houses some of the world’s most beautiful art in its three famous collections – at the Prado Museum, the Thyssen Museum and at the Reina Sofia National Museum and Art Centre. While the Prado and Thyssen house the works of the most important European classical artists from medieval times to the 19th century, the Reina Sofia Centre is dedicated to modernist art and famous as the home of Picasso’s ‘Guernica’.
Enjoy a two day visit to Segovia. Set upon a high rocky spur between the rivers Eresma and Clamores, the city is a showcase of Castilian art and architecture. The historic core of the old town is known for its numerous Romanesque churches as well as exquisite townhouses and luxurious palaces belonging to the many noble families who lived thereover the centuries. On an imposing cliff-top overlooking Segovia stands the palace of Alcázar, the ancient fortification-turned-Castilian royal seat where many crucial historical events took place – the most important being the unification of Castile and Aragon into one kingdom.
