Monday 11 November 2024
Monday 11 to Friday 15 November 2024
The Biennale is the world’s largest and best-known international exhibition of contemporary art. As always, the Biennale 2024 promises to be an exciting and enlightening experience, an invitation to reflect on our understanding of art, culture and identity in a confusing world, both increasingly alienated and interconnected. Accompanied by art historian, Nirvana Romell, explore the many pavilions of this festival of contemporary art in a city which itself boasts one of the most impressive accumulations of artistic and architectural masterpieces in the world.
Day 1. Monday 11 November. Depart Manchester this afternoon at 14:50 on the direct EasyJet flight to Venice. On arrival, scheduled for 18h15, walk 500m from the terminal to the Alilaguna pier and take a public boat transfer to central Venice.
Day 2. Tuesday. 12 November. Start exploring the Biennale today with a morning visit to its original venue – the Giardini, a large park created by Napoleon on the eastern edge of Venice. Today, there are 29 national pavilions, including the Josef Hoffmann's Austrian Pavilion, Gerrit Thomas Rietveld's Dutch pavilion and the pre- fab Finnish pavilion with a trapezoidal plan designed by Alvar Aalto.
Day 3. Wednesday 13 November. This morning, walk to the Arsenale, the other major exhibition area of the Biennale. The Arsenale used to be a symbol of the economic, political and military power of the Venetian Republic. The area’s slow regeneration started in the 1980s, when it was reinvented as the exhibition space for the ever-expanding Biennale.
Day 4. Thursday 14 November. This morning the party will return to the Arsenale and visit other exhibition areas such as Sale d’Armi, Artigliere and various national pavilions housed there.
Day 5. Friday 14 November. This morning we take a short walk to explore the sestiere (town district) of Castello, some of its iconic buildings and turbulent past. We then have lunch and return home.
