The Juna String Quartet are a Manchester-based ensemble, currently in their second year of study at the Royal Northern College of Music. Since forming in 2022, they have been quick to establish themselves, reaching the final of the Weil Prize in their first year. They chose the name ‘Juna’ for its multitude of meanings in various languages, including courage, gentleness, and woodland, and to appreciate the word as a woman’s name.
People often comment on the bubbly dynamic of the ensemble, and the friendship that shines through their music making.
First violinist, Yunyi Liu, comes from China and studies with the RNCM’s International Chair in Violin, Yair Kless.
Second violinist, Nina Doig, grew up in Glasgow where she was a part of the RCS Junior Department.
Estelle Gonzalez comes from London and studies both viola and composition at the RNCM.
Local cellist, Elena Edwards, began studying at Chetham’s School of Music, which she attended for her final two years of school.
Recent performances have confirmed their excitement for their repertoire and ensemble, and they can’t wait to see what the future holds.
The Juna String Quartet appears by kind permission of the RNCM
