The Whitworth's Jesse Tree Textile
Thursday 07 March 2024
Like many Jesse Trees from the later Middle Ages, the one on a late fifteenth-century woven altar frontal in the collections of The Whitworth engages its beholder with a lively presentation of the Biblical Kings of Israel wearing elaborate costumes and making dramatic gestures amongst the curling vines of a richly foliated ‘Tree’, whilst small animals graze on the vegetation below. Many of us will have been fascinated by its display in the Albrecht Dürer’s Material World exhibition (closes 10 March 2024). The talk will introduce several contexts for understanding more about it, including its Jesse Tree subject matter, its special qualities as a tapestry, and details of its acquisition.
Speaker:
Dr Anne Kirkham, Lecturer in European Medieval Art, The University of Manchester
Further Details:
Cost per person: £10.00
