Knowsley Hall and Safari Park
Tuesday 23 May 2023
For the late spring day out, we will be driving through Knowsley Safari Park in the morning and visiting Knowsley Hall for a private afternoon guided tour.
Knowsley Hall is the home of the 19th Earl and Countess of Derby which has been in the ownership of the Stanley family since 1385 and set in 2,500 acres of stunning walled parklands.
We will have the rare opportunity to be guided by the Curator of the Derby Collection, Dr Stephen Lloyd, who is also a Friend of the Whitworth, and see inside one of Merseyside's hidden treasures.
The guided tour will last approximately 1½ hours and incorporates the 600-year-long history of the Stanley family and the Earls of Derby as well as the history of the Hall, Park and Estate. As guests we will be guided through all the State Rooms, including the Entrance Hall, Grand Staircase, Library, Walnut Drawing Room, Stucco Room and State Dining Room, amongst others. The rooms are furnished and decorated with items from the Derby Collection, highlights of which will be revealed along the way. From the rooms on the east side of the house, magnificent views of the surrounding gardens can be seen.
The tour also includes refreshments (tea, coffee and home-made biscuits) and an opportunity to ask the Curator any questions.
