Brighten up January and join our curatorial talk with Amy George on Althea McNish and her highly acclaimed exhibition ‘Colour is Mine’ which Amy curated. Afterwards, there will also be an opportunity to find out out more about the Open House project and talk with Olivia Heron.
McNish was the first Caribbean designer to achieve international recognition and one of the most influential and innovative textile designers in the UK. Drawing on extensive new research, this exhibition explores McNish’s extraordinary career and her transformative impact on mid-century design, along with her enduring influence today. Highlights include items from McNish’s recently uncovered personal archive – much of which has never been seen before. Also on display will be examples of McNish’s original designs alongside her most celebrated textiles and wallpapers.
Following Amy's talk, Olivia Heron, curator, will talk about the Open House project and meet those who want to share photos, stories or memories of their life lived with wallpaper.
Open House is a research project that aims to unlock the social potential of the Whitworth’s collection of 10,000 wallpapers. As well as historic, prestige examples, we hold a large body of everyday, mass produced wallpapers manufactured in mills in the North West. Wallpapers this these lined the walls of almost every British home throughout the 20th century. Open House connects the lives that have taken place in front of wallpaper to the Whitworth’s collection.
In April 2022 we launched a call out inviting members of the public to contribute their home photographs, stories and memories related to wallpapers they lived with. They are being added to our wallpaper collection archive to create a record of twentieth century life, and a selection are being displayed in the exhibition and in the project publication
