Exclusive Gallery Talk on Conservation
Exclusive Gallery Talk on Conservation
Wednesday 14 September 2022
Following the successful Whitworth Park Sculpture Trail, Lou Ashon, sculpture conservator, will give a gallery talk on the conservation of ‘Bending’ and the chance to see the sculpture before it returns to the Park in late September.
Lou will explain the conservation treatments she is carrying out and how the materials and design of the plinth have been improved to ensure that it can withstand the weather. There will also be plenty of time for questions and discussion.
The sculpture is now undergoing conservation. The plinth will be rebuilt using more resilient materials and damage to the surface of the figure will be repaired. Conservation work on the figure will take place in the galleries, so visitors will be able to see some of the work that usually takes place behind the scenes.
‘Bending’ has become an instantly recognisable part of the gallery’s collection and was partly funded by the Friends of the Whitworth Gallery in 2008. Unfortunately, the conditions outside have led to a deterioration in the structural stability of the plinth and the surface of the figure.
