New Lights: British Stained Glass 1918-2018

The story of stained glass in Britain during the past century can be told in various ways. In this illustrated lecture Adrian will focus on three significant aspects, the first being the revival of interest in stained glass following the end of the First World War and the sudden demand for war memorial windows. The transformative impact of the glass in Basil Spence’s Coventry Cathedral, and especially the influence of John Piper and Laurence Lee, will be the second aspect; while the third, moving into the twenty-first century, will be the demand for millennium windows that brought to prominence the stained glass art of Thomas Denny. His work – as seen at Durham, Hereford and Leicester Cathedrals and at churches across the country – has encouraged a new emphasis on figures seen in a landscape and a heightened sense of locality and history. No longer is London the centre of stained glass production (as it was in 1918) and the lecture will conclude by exploring how these shifts are reflected in the work of a small community of stained glass artists working in Cumbria.
Adrian Barlow lives in Gloucestershire, having retired in 2011 as Director of Public and Professional Programmes at the University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education. He is the current President of the English Association and series editor of Cambridge Contexts in Literature.
