Neglected during his own life time, the Romantic poet, painter, printmaker and prophet William Blake (1757-1827), has been a source of inspiration for artists, writers, musicians and film-makers since his rediscovery in the middle of the nineteenth-century. Particularly during the 1950s and 1960s Blake was a major influence on counter-cultural forms, and had a formative impact on literary production such as in the work of Allen Ginsberg or Angela Carter.
