Pilkington Season Part 2 Art & Plague
Tuesday 10 November 2020
The Plague arrived in Europe in the mid-14th century and quickly wiped out an estimated 30-60% of its population. The pandemic was conducive to great social, political and religious changes which ushered in the Renaissance chapter of European history. Artists, as always, interpreted the new ways of living and dying with original images and structures -Black Plague made a lasting mark in art history, too.
In the second instalment of Art & Plague, Nirvana Romell will be looking at the ways in which the Black Death was reflected in the arts of the 16th and 17th century Europe. True to their general identity, the Northerners approached the subject with more angst, fear and detail, while the South tried to maintain the poise. As the waves of pandemics eased off, some survivors had to deal with unexpected consequences.
