Pilkington Season Part 1 Art & Plague
Pilkington Season Part 1 Art & Plague
Tuesday 06 October 2020
The Plague arrived in Europe in the mid-14th century and quickly wiped out an estimated 30-60% of its population. The pandemic was conducive to great social, political and religious changes which ushered in the Renaissance chapter of European history. Artists, as always, interpreted the new ways of living and dying with original images and structures. From Living Cross and dancing skeletons to post-plague churches, Black Plague made a lasting mark in art history, too.
In the first instalment of Art & Plague, Nirvana Romell will be looking at the 14th and 15th century Europe and the ways in which art was used to explain and come to terms with the Black Death.
