The Odd Couple: Edmonia Lewis and Louise Bourgeois
Two different generations, two continents, two opposite ends of the spectrum of sculptural innovation. Two amazing artists - lecture by Art Historian Sara Riccardi a graduate of the University of Rome and founder of 'Art Across' https://www.artacross.co.uk/
About this event
Visually very different, and expression of two very different worlds, the work of Edmonia Lewis and that of Louise Bourgeois can nonetheless be analysed in parallels, as both artists found their own way of dealing with intense themes of identity and personal experiences in their art.
One died just after the beginning of the 20th century, the other was born as the century began; one started her career in America and then established herself in Europe, the other took the reverse path; one worked in a rather conservative style, the other explored realms of artistic expression never beaten before; one is little known, the other is one of the few female artistic household names today.
This talk will explore the life and career of Edmonia Lewis and Louise Bourgeois, as two examples of female artists at the turn of the 20th century. The apparent contradiction in the pairing of the two artists will perhaps be resolved in a reflection about personal expression, identity, social pressure, and the complexities of modern art.
The event has been commissioned by the Friends of the Whitworth, but it is open to anyone!
