A Day in Harrogate by Coach
The Mercer Art Gallery is the final destination of 'Northern Exposure', the touring exhibition which is following in the footsteps of JMW Turner's own tour of the North. In 1797 and 22 years of age, Joseph Mallord William Turner set out on an eight-week sketching tour of the North of England. As Turner came north he was exposed to weather, light, landscape and the vivid conditions of the world of the north.
At 12.00 we will drive to Harlow Carr RHS garden for a 2½ hour visit. There is a Betty’s tearoom and shop in Harlow Carr but it may be a good choice to bring lunch with you to enjoy the time in the garden.
Later we will visit Collector, Mark Hinchliffe in his former Methodist chapel that he has restored and turned into a home for his collection of art and artefacts. Many elements of the original building remain, including the pulpit and the 40ft-high atrium, now the grandest of living rooms. The original stained-glass windows were restored and a galleried dining room created. Mark now in his 50s has been collecting paintings (around 800) and objets d’art since he was 20.
