50th Pilkington Lecture by The Singh Twins
'Slaves of Fashion'
The Singh Twins are contemporary British artists with an international reputation whose contribution to art has been recognised at the highest level. In 2010 they were made Honorary Citizens of their home city of Liverpool. In 2011 they were each awarded MBE's and in 2015, Honorary Doctorates of Fine Art from the University of Chester for ‘outstanding contribution to British art’. Whilst just this year, they received an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of Liverpool. Their award-winning work, which challenges and redefines generally accepted, Eurocentric perceptions of heritage and identity in art and society was cited by Sir Simon Schama in his BBC documentary series ‘The Face of Britain’, as representing the artistic face of modern Britain.
Past exhibitions include solo shows at London’s National Portrait Gallery, National Museums Scotland, National Museums Liverpool and the National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai and Delhi. In 2016 The Twins were extended a special invitation to participate in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and their public commission for the Museum of London which offers their personal response to two famous Victorian paintings on the theme of the ‘Indian Mutiny’ or First War of Indian Independence’, was selected for Tate Britain’s ‘Artist and Empire’ International touring exhibition. Last year their latest exhibition 'Slaves of Fashion', attracted over 105,000 visitors at it's launch venue in Liverpool. Most recently, the artwork they were commissioned by Royal Collections Trust to create for the Queen's Gallery Buckingham Palace exhibition, titled, 'Splendours of the Subcontinent', won the 2019 Asian Culture Theatre and Arts Awards for visual arts.
The presentation by the Twins will focus on their latest Slaves of Fashion series exploring how the history of Indian textiles is a global story of Empire, trade, colonialism, conquest and consumerism that remains relevant to current debates on ethical trade and modern day slavery. The series includes both painted and highly detailed, mixed medium digital works representing the latest development in their creative processes. They will be also be screening their short poem film 'King Cotton' as part of the talk
