Lecture by Nirvana Romell
The Jazz Age: Riviera Between the Wars
While Impressionists’ exhibitions in Paris represented the first wave of Modernism, the next generation of avant-garde artists left the capital in search of new directions. A lot of them found renewed inspiration in Provence and Cote d’Azur. It is difficult to talk about Modernism without mentioning the south of France – it seems that most of the movement’s early history was forged in the Mediterranean sunshine.
It wasn’t until after WW1 that Cote d’Azur became known as a summer destination for writers and artists as well as wealthy American expatriates, many of whom enthusiastically supported avant-garde art. As high society, with all its strict societal rules, departed at the end of every winter season, the Modernists would arrive to celebrate art and life with abandon. At the Riviera, Modernism truly became the way of life, manifesting itself not just in sunny canvases but also in new architecture, design, sculpture, film and photography. The lecture discusses artistic developments of the 1920s and 1930s at the Riviera – from Picasso’s heydays and Surrealism, to the re-invention of private patronage in the Modernist era.
