A Study Tour to the Cote D'Azur June 12th to 19th 2019
Following our very successful visits led by Nirvana Romell to Kosovo and Montenegro (2018), Istria & Friuli (2015), South Africa (2013), Sweden (2011) and Dalmatia (2009), we are planning a Friends’ tour with Nirvana in June next year to the Cote D’Azur, France. The tour will include five nights in Nice and two in Hyeres, with Manchester-based direct flights.
Cote D’Azur has been attracting artists, collectors and art lovers since the arrival of railroads in 1860s. Its charms remain undiminished as the new generations continue to contribute to its rich cultural life and heritage. Our journey aims to showcase various aspects of these riches, through the visits to a mixture of old and newly-opened, well-known and perhaps not-so-famous sites.
The highlights will include, among others:
- Foundation Maeght, the Musée Mougins of Classical Art (opened to great acclaim in 2011) and newly opened Fondation Carmignac on the Porquerolles island - highlighting not just great art but also offering an insight into art collecting and its social and cultural impact
- Musee Matisse and International Museum of Naïve Art in Nice, Musee Bonnard in Le Cannet and Musée de l’Annonciade in St. Tropez
- Recently restored Eileen Grey’s masterpiece, villa E-1027 near Cap Martin; Villa Noailles and its ‘Cubist garden’ in Hyeres and Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild at Cap Ferrat – juxtaposing the gilded classical opulence of Belle Epoque and functional aesthetics of Modernist architecture and design.
Kindly note that we expect to spend approximately 6-7 hours per day on our feet, doing 9000 to 10000 steps (7-8km/5 miles).
Nirvana is Croatian by birth and has a postgraduate degree in the Art History of Western Art and Art History of former Yugoslavia. She has lectured regularly in History of Art for Manchester Art Gallery, National Museums of Liverpool (The Walker), the Art Society and, now, for the FoW on ‘Roots of Modernism’.
