Birmingham Art Gallery & 15 century frescoes in Bournville
We will spend the morning in Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, where Jacob Epstein’s sculpture Lucifer in the Round Room Gallery welcomes visitors as they enter the museum. The Pre-Raphaelite galleries bring together highlights from this extraordinary collection to tell the story of the Brotherhood, and their revolutionary contribution to British art. Discover the story of the Staffordshire Hoard, the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold ever found.
After lunch (not included) the coach will drive us to Selly Manor, originally a large farmhouse, dating back to the late 15th century. George Cadbury, founder of Bournville, bought the building in 1907 and arranged for it to be moved from Selly Oak to where it stands today. We will have a talk on the Laurence Cadbury Collection of period furniture.
Finally we will visit The Church of the Holy Prince Lazar, also known as Lazarica Church, this Serbian Orthodox church located in Bournville, was built for political refugees from Yugoslavia after World War II, with the support of the exiled Prince Tomislav of Yugoslavia and the Cadbury family. The interior has a full scheme of traditional Byzantine decoration. There will also be a temporary exhibition of 15 century frescoes on display in the church.
