2019 FoW Tour
In early June, 2019, the Friends of the Whitworth (FOW) are planning a six night trip to the Cote D’Azur. Visiting museums and galleries, artist’s residences, a lavish palazzo and an avant-garde villa, we will explore connections between artists, and consider the ‘art of collecting’ in some magnificent settings. Our excursion will investigate the ways in which Modernism was forged on the French Riviera. We will be based in Nice. The tour will be organised and accompanied by Nirvana Romell. As many Friends will be aware, Nirvana has accompanied five very successful journeys for the Friends since 2010.
It was the British who ‘discovered’ the French Riviera in the late 18th century, and flocked to it every winter to enjoy mild Mediterranean climate. But it wasn’t until the late 19th century that the unification with France and the arrival of railroads created the unprecedented cultural boom in the area. Tired of Parisian hustle and bustle, the artists followed in the footsteps of Cézanne and Van Gogh, searching for light, peace and purity of expression. The veritable list of resident and visiting artists reads as ‘Who is Who’ of early 20th century Modernism – Renoir, Bonnard, Picasso, Braque, Cocteau, Le Corbusier... “When I realised that I would see this light again every morning,” Matisse wrote about his first visit to Nice, “I couldn’t believe how lucky I was.” Of all the artistic destinations in France – Brittany, Normandy, the Barbizon Forrest, Provence – the Riviera offered the perfect mix of creative conditions as well as proximity of wealthy collectors.
Details of the Cote D’Azur tour are still being finalised. Further information will be available in the summer and ‘Expressions of Interest’ forms will be sent out in August.
