Sunday 12 November 2017
The wide scale of changes that shook the Western society in 19th century had far-reaching effects on arts and culture. Traditional forms of art, materials and methods of production appeared outdated, incapable of expressing the new industrialised world. Modernism arose as a philosophical as well as a formal rejection of classical aesthetics and academic values. In art history, the term ‘modernism’ usually refers to the period from the mid-18th century to the 1970s. However, like the term itself, these dates continue to be hotly debated.
The subject of this lecture is the early Modernist movements that emerged from the 1870s to the outbreak of the First World War, their socio-historical background and the ways in which they influenced modernist art of the 20th century. The talk will focus on the lasting legacy of Monet, Matisse, Picasso, Duchamp and other early modernists.’
