A chance to see Britain's only known Ice Age Rock Art in Creswell Crags, which was discovered by archaeologists in 2003. These engravings of animals, birds and motifs are 13,000 years old, making Church Hole Cave the oldest art gallery in the country. This visit involves a 10 minute walk and 13 steps up to a wooden platform. Or spend time in the new lottery funded Museum showcasing some of the rarest Ice Age finds from the caves.
There is a 20 minute bridleway walk to the Harley Gallery, as an option to taking the coach. Lunch will be available in the Harley Café or the Dukeries Garden Centre Restaurant (not included).
In the Harley Gallery an exhibition of surreal imaginative drawings exploring ecology, biology and nature. The Portland Collection opened to the public for the first time in 2016, exhibiting rare masterpieces by Michelangelo, Van Dyck, and even the earring worn by Charles I at his execution in 1649.The exhibits are idiosyncratic, interesting, unusual, and cast light on family history, art history, and, well, just history in general.
