Roots of Modernism, Part 1
A series of three lectures by Nirvana Romell
(parts 2 & 3 will be in future 2017 programmes)
The wide scale of changes that shook the Western society in the 19th century had far-reaching effects on arts and culture. Traditional forms of art, materials and methods of production appeared outdated, incapable of expressing the new industrialized world. Modernism arose as a philosophical as well as a formal rejection of classical aesthetics and academic values. In art history, the term ‘modernism’ usually refers to the period from the mid-18th century to the 1970s. However, like the term itself, these dates continue to be hotly debated.
Investigating the socio-historical roots of modernism, the first lecture in the series looks at some ‘proto-modern’ movements and artists such as Goya, Delacroix, Turner and Blake and tackles the meaning of ‘modern’ in art.

I am disappointed to find that this lecture is sold out. Would it be possible to hold it in a larger room?
