Dear Friends of the Whitworth
Dear Friends of the Whitworth
..... all of you
I stood in front of Jeff's wonderful work today in the South Gallery with tears in my eyes. It is exactly the kind of work we love for the Whitworth's collection - a delicate but powerful work on ethereal rice paper, with luminous colour, spare and precise form and a profound sculptural quality. It is also exactly the kind of work I love myself.
Your generosity toward the collection, in honour of me, makes me feel very proud and delighted and it will continue to give joy to visitors ever after!
Please do circulate this thank you email to the whole marvellous Tuesday team and share my thanks widely with the membership. I shall also write you all a letter that I hope you may publish in your magazine. It has been an absolutely pleasure to work with you all over these last 11 years. We all know there are no finer Friends than the Whitworth Friends. You have supported me every step of the way in my work to develop and expand our wonderful gallery - and we would never have got started on the capital project without your financial kickstart. It is your generosity that us kept us collecting artworks, building the 'new Whitworth' and filling it with wonderful activity and people.
Most of all, you have all been friends to me, from the very beginning when, as Mary observed in her wonderful leaving speech, no one knew who I was!
Caroline - then secretary - invited me to her house in summer 2006 so I could see a house for sale (no 6) in an amazing street called Moon Grove. I hadn't sold my place in Birmingham so I missed out on that one, but never forgot the magical street. And how amazing that in summer 2012 I find myself viewing and buying HER house and living here very happily ever since.
In extraordinary ways, the Friends have been bound up with the success and the happiness of my 11 years in Manchester.
I salute you all and thank you very much indeed. You are true Friends of the Whitworth! I shall not be a stranger.
With love

You are absolutely right. Maria will be missed, even though, no doubt over time "our new Director", whoever that turns out to be, will take us on another exciting journey. Still, for now, it was great that we were able to mark Maria's contribution by the purchase for the Gallery of a work by Jeff McMillan. It joins the literally 100s of works purchased by the Friends over the years through fundraising efforts and membership subscriptions.

We will all miss Maria and thank her for the fantastic work she has done in the gallery. The Friends feel proud to have helped her to fulfil her vision. We will continue to support the gallery and would love to have more members join us .Our events also offer opportunities to enjoy the company of others who love this unique gallery and to widen your own artistic horizons.
